RITA SCISM

Executive Director for Laura's Homes

Rita serves as the Associate Director for Hands On Missions and is the Executive Director for Laura's Homes of North Carolina. She has gone on many international mission trips with Hands On Missions and works diligently in serving the children at Laura’s Home seven days a week. God placed His vision of Christine’s Home in Rita’s heart when she was 21 years old. Over the years, her parents have taken in and cared for over 300 children in their home. Rita witnessed first hand the abuse many of those children experienced, where most of these children came from homes where they fell victim to the poor choices of their parents, usually due to alcohol and drug abuse. Rita’s sister, Christine, loved the children, helped with homework, and became their best friend. Our first group home...Christine's Home is named in honor and memory of Christine Ross, who passed away with Multiple Sclerosis in 1998. In May of 2005, Rita with the help of numerous, loving supporters, volunteers, and contributors, opened Christine’s Home to be a group home for residential care to foster children, who have been neglected, abused, and abandoned. She is a member of New Bethel Baptist Church where she has served as WMU Director, VBS Director for several years, and has taught several Sunday school classes. Rita has two sons, Jonathan and Michael, daughter-in-law Nicole, and three grandsons Judd, Brody and Anson.

GLENN WALKER

Assistant Director for Laura’s Homes

Pastor Glenn R Walker was born on March 15, 1947. He is married to Rachel and in August celebrated 53 years of marriage. They have two children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He gave his life to full time Christian ministry in 1969. He was licensed in 1969 and ordained in 1971 by Polkville Baptist church, Polkville, NC. He graduated from Gardner-Webb University in August 1973 with a BA in Religion and from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, TX in December 1977 with a Master of Divinity degree. He has pastored several churches. In 1997 he founded a short-term mission’s organization, Hands On Missions, Inc. in Shelby, NC and was the director until September 2014. He also served as Interim Director of Hands On Missions from November 2017 until January 2019. He served from 2014 to 2017 as Senior Pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Hudson, NC. At present he works part-time with Laura’s Homes of North Carolina, two Christian group homes in Shelby, NC and is a Bi-vocational Pastor at Goodes Creek Baptist Church, Cliffside NC. He and Rachel are members of Goodes Creek Baptist Church .

LEIGHANN CLARK

Program Manager/Social Worker for Laura's Homes

Leighann Clark is the social worker for Laura's Homes of North Carolina. Leighann attends court, corresponds with DSS social workers and staff, participles in treatment team meetings, conducts out of home family service agreements for each child, corresponds with the school system, attends individualized education plan meetings and behavior intervention meetings with the school system, manages visitations and other activities for the children. Leighann is a lifelong resident of Cleveland County. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Gardner Webb University in 1993. Prior to being employed for Laura's Homes, she worked with children and adults that were seen at the Mental Health Center. Leighann is dediciated to making the lives of the children better emotionally, spiritually and physically. She is a member of Temple Baptist Church. Leighann is married to Tim Clark and they have one son, Sean.

PEGGY LAIL

Secretary for Laura's Homes

Peggy is the secretary for Laura's Home. She manages the financial accounts, books, receipts, and is in charge of payroll. She also manages the finances, donations, and contributions to Laura’s Home. Peggy manages the thank you notes to all our wonderful supporters. Peggy is a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir and served as the four-year old Sunday school teacher for several years. Peggy enjoys reading and has a heart to serve Christ. Peggy has two children, Bruce and Debra, has two grandchildren, Adam and Amanda, and she has five great-grandchildren.

JULIE CROTTS

Property Manager

Julie works two days a week keeping the homes up to date carefully montoring safety by doing inspections of vehicles monthly and quarterly internal inspections of the homes. She also goes to the Food Bank and keeps food organized and delivered to the homes. She attends Wiklers Grove Baptist Church. Julie has three daughters Michelle, Tammy and Crystal, and six grandchildren.

JANE FALLS

Office and Human Resource Manager

Participates actively in administrative organizational tasks directly related to obtaining and maintaining national accreditation. Oversees accreditation process of Workforce Development and Management, Technology, Rights of Persons Served, and Accessibility.

Jane worked for Commercial Vehicle Group for 24 years as Master Scheduler before joining Laura’s Homes. Before retiring from CVG, Jane prayed that God would lead her to a place that she would be a blessing to others. God answered her prayers and lead her to Laura’s Homes. She graduated from Shelby High School. Jane attended Cleveland Community College for two years studying Business and Marketing. She has lived in Shelby most of her life but now resides in Lawndale. She is married to Steve Falls and they have one daughter and son n law, Jim and Cassie Roebuck and two granddaughters Makenzie and Madison. Jane and Steve attend New Bethel Baptist Church.

Jane’s responsibilities include working directly with organizations, church’s, and individual’s to sponsor the children and youth at Christmas. She helps to plan activities for the children and youth and seeks mentors for them. Jane attends different churches when invited to educate others about Laura’s Home. She is responsible for the clothing and toiletry needs room. Jane keeps up with the insurance and billing and background checks for new employees. She works closely with the executive director taking on other administration responsibilities.

AMBER GREGORY

Direct Care Manager

Amber has lived in Cleveland County with her husband since 2006. She has a daughter named Hailey. She has a Master’s Degree in Human Services with concentrations in Child and Family Welfare as welll as Nonprofit Organization and Management from Kaplan University. She attends Pleasant City Church in Shelby.

 Houseparents are the foundation of teaching, caring for and loving the children: Please pray for them and the sometimes difficult spiritual, physical, and emotional tasks they face daily.
